Getting Illustrator files into After Effects properly is crucial for clean animation. The wrong import method causes blurriness, missing layers, and frustration.
Step 1: Prepare in Illustrator
Before importing:
- Organize layers properly — each element you want to animate separately should be on its own layer
- Name your layers clearly
- Set your artboard to the final comp size (e.g., 1920×1080)
- Release all clipping masks and groups if possible
Step 2: Import Method
1. File → Import → File (or Ctrl/Cmd+I)
2. Select your .ai file
3. Import Kind: Choose "Composition - Retain Layer Sizes" (this is the right choice 95% of the time)
4. Click Open
Import options explained:
- Footage: Flattens everything into one layer — only for static backgrounds
- Composition: Each AI layer becomes an AE layer — THIS is what you want
- Composition - Retain Layer Sizes: Same as above, but each layer is cropped to its content size (better for transforms, anchor points are centered on each element)
Step 3: Convert to Shape Layers (Important!)
Imported AI layers are still rasterized footage. For true vector quality:
1. Select all the AI layers in your timeline
2. Right-click → Create Shapes from Vector Layer
3. This converts each layer to an editable AE shape layer
4. You now have infinite resolution, editable paths, and access to shape layer features (Trim Paths, Repeater, etc.)
Why your AI import looks blurry:
- Continuously Rasterize isn't enabled: Click the star/sun icon ☀️ on the layer. This tells AE to re-rasterize the vector at any scale.
- Transforms before converting: If you scale an AI layer beyond 100% without Continuously Rasterize, it pixelates.
Common pitfalls:
- AI blend modes may not transfer perfectly — check after import
- AI effects (drop shadows, glows) often need to be recreated in AE
- Text should be outlined in AI before import, OR kept as editable text and handled separately in AE
- Missing fonts will cause fallback — install all fonts before importing
Pro tip: The ideal workflow is: Design in Illustrator → Import as Composition with Retained Layer Sizes → Immediately convert to Shape Layers → Animate. This gives you full vector quality at any resolution, complete editability of all paths, and access to AE's shape layer tools like Trim Paths and Repeaters.
