A well-organized AE project is the difference between a smooth workflow and a nightmare. Here's the system used by studios and professional freelancers.
Project Panel Folder Structure:
Create these folders in your Project panel (right-click โ New Folder):
๐ 00_FINAL COMPS (main output compositions)
๐ 01_PRECOMPS (all nested compositions)
๐ 02_FOOTAGE (video files, image sequences)
๐ 03_GRAPHICS (logos, illustrations, PSD/AI files)
๐ 04_AUDIO (music, SFX, VO)
๐ 05_SOLIDS (shape layers, adjustment layers, nulls)
๐ 06_REFERENCE (style frames, storyboards)
๐ 99_OLD (deprecated versions โ don't delete, just archive)
The numbered prefixes force alphabetical sort to match your workflow order.
Naming conventions:
- Comps: SCENE01_hero-animation_v2 (scene, description, version)
- Precomps: pc_bg-particles or pc_title-reveal (prefix with pc_)
- Layers: Be descriptive โ "bg circle 3" not "Shape Layer 47"
- Footage: Keep original filenames, organize in subfolders by type
Timeline organization:
Version control:
- Save incremental versions: project_v01.aep, project_v02.aep, etc.
- Or use File โ Increment and Save (Ctrl/Cmd+Alt/Option+Shift+S)
- Never overwrite โ always increment
Pro tip: Spend 10 minutes organizing at the START of every project. Create your folder structure, import all assets, name everything properly before you make a single keyframe. Your future self (and anyone else who opens the project) will thank you. In studios, delivering a messy project file is considered unprofessional โ it's part of the deliverable.
